Multiple Sclerosis: What You Should Know

April 12, 2016 by Jenn Bottoms Leave a Comment

Unpredictable and often disabling, Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body. Although the cause of MS is unknown, scientists believe that it may lie in genetic and/ or environmental factors. As is the case with any medical condition, the more you know, the better. And knowing all options for care plans, including drug-free treatment, can be extremely beneficial to the patient. Alternative treatments such as Chiropractic Neurology have shown marked quality of life improvement in many patients suffering from chronic diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis.

In the US today, Multiple Sclerosis affects about 400,000 people with about 200 new cases being documented each week. Worldwide, that number increases to 2.3 million people with the disease. Far more prevalent in females than males, it is between two to three times more common in women and is typically diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, though the average age for symptoms to appear is in the 30s.  Multiple sclerosis symptoms are different for everyone and largely unpredictable. Some people experience one or two symptoms while others experience many. Symptoms can change over time as well so it is important to know what the symptoms are. In the case of MS, some of the more common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Vision problems
  • Walking difficulties
  • Bladder or bowel problems
  • Pain
  • Depression or emotional changes
  • Cognitive changes

Less common, the following symptoms also present themselves to some patients:

  • Speech problems
  • Tremors or seizures
  • Breathing or swallowing problems
  • Headaches
  • Itching
  • Hearing loss

Diagnosing Mutliple Sclerosis can be tricky and is often a difficult process. Because there is no one single test that can identify MS, a series of tests are needed so that doctors can rule out other conditions and begin treatment. Once a diagnosis has been reached, treatment varies wildly by patient as well. Many times, as with many other conditions, drugs are the first line of treatment. However, drug therapies come with a host of side effects and many times make life difficult in other ways for the patient. For many, it is imperative to find a care plan that alleviates the symptoms of MS while helping, rather than further hindering, the patients quality of life. More and more patients are caregivers are finding that Chiropractic Neurology is a very good option for those suffering from the symptoms of MS.

Chiropractic Neurologists are highly trained experts in the functioning of the brain, spine and nervous system. Since MS is a disease of the central nervous system, having a physician who understands the inner workings of the brain and nervous system is imperative to finding the best care. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to alleviate many of the symptoms associated with MS, all without drugs or invasive techniques, helping patients realize a much better quality of life and markedly improved management of the disease.
