Alternatives for Treatment of Sports Injuries

January 12, 2013 by Jenn Bottoms Leave a Comment

Sports injuries are quite common and almost anyone who exercises on a regular basis will develop an ache, pain or sports injury at some time. From acute injuries such as sprains, fractures and tears to chronic conditions such as tendinitis and overuse, the number and type of sports injuries are as varied as the number of sports and the athletes who play them. Some common sports injuries include everything from blisters to sprains to more serious conditions such as fractures and concussion. (For a list of the most common sports injuries, click here.) Other sports injuries are a result of over-training and recognizing the symptoms of over-training as well as getting the proper amount of rest and recovery time are keys to staying healthy and active as well as having the best performance.

So what should you do if you suffer a sports injury? While each athlete and each injury are unique, it is imperative to get a complete exam when faced with any type of sports related injury. Chiropractic neurologists are adept at using a variety of neurological techniques to treat a vast array of sports injuries and the key to getting started on the right road to recovery is a thorough exam to assess the patient’s condition.

Experts in the function of the body during movement, Chiropractic Neurologists focus on the total body through individualized treatment allowing for faster recovery. Some of the ways in which this can be achieved include increasing the communication between the brain and the body, which in turns aids in resetting musculoskeletal firing patterns, increases the stability of our joints and increasing or decreasing muscle tone in certain joints.  A complete understanding of the nervous system is often overlooked by traditional medical doctors, leading to incomplete or even misdiagnosis. This is especially true when it comes to overuse or repetitive injury.

Dr. Ellis and his team at Georgia Chiropractic Neurology Center begin each patient’s treatment with the thorough and individualized exam that is most beneficial to finding the source of the injury, and not just treating the symptoms of pain. Dr. Ellis’ treatment includes a comprehensive look at not only the joints but also the muscles, ligaments and fascia, areas that are commonly overlooked. Many times treatment can also be integrated into an individual’s training program as well.

Chiropractic Neurology is becoming a more popular and desired treatment option with a faster road to recovery and non-invasive and drug-free treatment options, and has been recognized in the area of sports injury, traumatic brain injury and many other conditions by media giants Sports Illustrated, ABC’s Nightline and more. One story that is truly inspiring is that of NHL player Sidney Crosby, who suffered a concussion that took him out of the game for several months. Working alongside Dr. Ted Carrick and a team of other Chiropractic Neurologists and students, Dr. Ellis was able to see first-hand the rewards of their work and see Sidney return to the ice and the sport he loves.
