PEMF Therapy for Migraines

January 17, 2019 by Jenn Bottoms Leave a Comment

Did you know that more than 38 million people suffer from migraines in the U.S. today? That is a staggering statistic. Two to three million of those people are chronic migraine sufferers, meaning that they have more than fifteen headaches a month over a three month period. With so many occurrences of migraines and increased desire for drug-free therapies, there is renewed hope for treatment through the use of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy, better known as PEMF.

What Does PEMF Therapy Treat?

You may have heard of PEMF therapy for conditions such as chronic back pain, injury recovery, mental focus, sleep management or even stress reduction. PEMF therapy has shown to be effective for a wide array of conditions and the list is growing every day. Now new research has shown that PEMF therapy is incredibly effective for migraine pain…. a godsend for those who experience it.

How Effective Is PEMF Therapy for Migraine Pain?

One study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of PEMF therapy for migraine pain. Thirty-four women and eight men who met the International Headache Society’s criteria for chronic migraines, participated in the study. Each kept a one-month, pretreatment, baseline log of headache activity prior to the study. Next, they were placed into random groups to have either actual or placebo pulsing electromagnetic fields applied to their inner thighs for 1 hour per day, 5 days a week, for 2 weeks. After exposure, all subjects kept the log for at least one follow-up month.

Results

During the first month of follow-up, 73% of those receiving actual exposure reported decreased headaches (45% good decrease, 14% excellent decrease) compared to half of those receiving the placebo (15% worse, 20% good, 0% excellent). Ten of the 22 subjects who had actual exposure received two additional weeks of exposure after their one-month follow-up. All showed decreased headache activity (50% good, 38% excellent) showing that PEMF is, in fact, effective therapy for migraine headaches. And the FDA agrees… They have officially approved PEMF therapy for the treatment of migraine pain.

How Does It Work?

The short version is that PEMF therapy works through the transfer of energy. Using bursts of low-level electromagnetic currents, PEMF therapy stimulates tissue regeneration, reduces imbalances in the body, stimulates healing of bones, relieves injury-related pain and has even been shown to stimulate organs. This non-invasive treatment is perfect for the treatment of injuries and pain or chronic conditions like diabetes or depression plus many more.
